I haven't bought the game yet, but adding some solid MP options
might draw my interest.
Yeah, and it looks like they're trying to address some interesting issues with multiplayer (like how long it takes to do moves). I'm definitely getting it--of course, I'm so fanatical I'd probably buy a Civilization branded bag of doggie-doo.

The update looks like it will be pretty nice. But personally I don't really care about multiplayer at this point. I've always found the Civ series to be more of a single-player game. I like to take time planning my turns, especially at times of war. I'm not sure that MP will give me a better experience than I have now.
I would settle for them fixing the existing bugs; I found version 1.17 totally unplayable because of the horrible change to tech trading, so I'm back on 1.16 which is balanced, but very very slow on large maps (also no multibutton mouse support, sound issues, etc.).
There also is no mention if this update is going to cost money... it sounds like it will.

[/quote] Yup, yup. It's a full expansion pack. Full press info from Firaxis is here: http://www.civ3.com/pressrelease.cfm . Some people complained that they 'promised' multi-player with the original. I wasn't tracking it at that point, so I have no add'l info on that, but it's a mute point anyway now. I just find it a little funny that they announce this and will be presenting looks at E3 with serious Civ3 patches still rolling. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at any development-release cycles anymore after M3. :P
Having to pay the company to fix the game I've already bought
borders on obscene.
The thing people will be paying for is the multiplayer edition. This is the same way they released Civ 2 and the Multiplayer Gold Edition. Bug fixes continue to be released for the original game.
Also, Mr. Grumpy Pastry, the 1.21 patch should fix the bug that affects your style of game play. I guess tech trading wasn't that much of an issue for me--I just hoard techs and trade other stuff. It does seem like something of an exploit to me to make several hundred on one turn by hitting up different leaders for the same thing. I suppose pre-electronic communications that sort of thing would have been possible--but you'd have had to send out couriers all at the same time, you wouldn't have got your money for at least a year, and the other leader may have held a grudge if you got top dollar for an "exclusive deal" that you were peddling to every king, president and shah!

It may fix the issues, if it comes out. Double-hedging there. As much as hoping that updates will fix bugs without introducing other bugs, relying on vapourware updates to fix bugs is an even worse idea.
There is still no scenario editor either -- as had been promised. I guess Firaxis is taking advice from MumboJumbo.

Learning how to trade techs can be an invaluable skill, especially on the higher difficulty levels.

Well one thing the 1.17 patch reminded me about software "updates"... is that sometimes they aren't.
