For the last 8 months after declaring the "Dreamcast dead", all Sega has done is continue to promote the few remaining games coming out for the DC in the next year.
This surely helped to move the remaining consoles off the shelves over that time. Then they release Shenmue II in Japan for the DC and were weeks from the US release...and now all of a sudden it's another "on X-Box only" title.
Sure - MicroShaft isn't a heavy-handed monopoloy limiting the consumers options through tactics like refusing to deliver X-Boxes until Q2-Q3 to game store owners, unless they pony up the $5,000 for the in-store display. Niiiice.
As a fan of Sega games, I simply refuse to continue to be duped. I may miss out on a few quality games in the future, but they can take Shenmue II and shove it up their over-priced console controller's ports!

[/quote] In all fairness the reasoning for it seemed very rational to me. I may have read it wrong, but my impression was Shenmue 2 either came out on another console or there wouldn't be a Shenmue 3.

Unless Shenmue 3 is out for DC as well, I am not sure what the above has to do with it already being done for Dreamcast then dropped at last minute and being released already in Japan...

There are a fair number of reasons for this, bottom line it is about money and being able to continue employing the people who make the game. They are/were already hard up for cash when they didn't redo voices (not that that is all bad). While they would have made some money on Shenmue 2 DC in the US I doubt it would have been anywhere near enough to make Shenmue 3 on another platform. My guess is that right now they are concurrently working on the Xbox version of 2 and the 3rd installment, having the art department working with the reworked engine developing the artwork for 3. This is kind of beside the point, without knowing their financials I would bet that they might have made it to 3 but it would be rushed out or it would have cost some other Sega dev team their jobs. Yeah it sucks that DC owners get the shaft from MS, but assuming they are pouring money into it you can't really fault them for wanting it this way, and I have no doubt Sega went into the deal with open eyes. I don't have the perspective of owning a DC so I can't really see it that way, and besides the European version is supposed to still be coming out so all is not lost (c=.
Re: Sega, the shaft, and even another reason MS sucks
Yes, I understand all of that and to be honest I couldn't give a crap who loses their job, and who does or doesn't make money, or if there is a Shenmue 3, 4, 5 or whatever. Sega can stick the X-Box up their developers ases then fire them for all I care.
My point specifically is that way back 10 months ago when Sega declared the DC dead, they continually pumped the "remaining games" on the console to SELL those units. Out of the 3 or 4 left in the last days, Shenmue 2 was the crowning gem. I personally helped a couple people to purchase DCs based on this.
Now if they had been upfront in the last 10 months (less than 6 weeks from X-Box release), many people may have said "yeah the DC is dead as no more quality games are coming out. Now how many of them would have purchased an avail console like PS2 in that time? Who knows?
All I know is that as a Sega customer their lies have left a baaaad taste in a few mouths, and the attempt to "force" DC owners to become X-Box owners is offensive and outrageous.

sounds like Shenmue 2 is going to be an import title only for DC, eh?
If you're ever in the city here VJ, you can play it on my system! You'd probably rock on it better than me anyways!
