I havent tried it yet (since i cant find the demo encoder/player). It would be interesting to see how it compares to old mp3/WMA/Vorbis. One cool thing is that it's backwards compatible - although it wont sound as good in old mp3 mode.
One interesting thing is that, as the ZD Net article mentions, it doesnt have any anti-piracy stuff, so the RIAA wont use it, and probally use WMA instead. And since the whole idea of mp3 is to get Music For Free, a licensing fee for hardware and software (and streaming?) might not fly well.
