dominions is a very complex turn-based fantasy strategy game. the sequel has just come out, for windows, mac, linux, and solaris. it's not going to get much exposure because they don't have any money (there wasn't even a publisher for the first one), but I think it's a great game. there's a demo at http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/d2/6.htm. it doesn't include any documentation beyond a one-page quickstart (although there's some in-game help), so I'd recommend looking around the developer's site for a manual etc. for dom 1, which is basically the same game with a worse interface and fewer features. they haven't yet updated the site with any information on dom 2, heh.

    Re: Dominions 2

I played a fair bit of Dominions, and it was really interesting. Grabbed the demo for Dominions 2 yesterday but haven't really figured out what I'm doing yet. I'm also distracted by Space Empires IV (same publisher) which I just bought. Both of these game series very much emphasize depth over glitz.

    OSX Demo

I read its pimping on MGF and grabbed the OSX demo, but when double clicking or cmd-o opening the application, next to nothing happens. Has anyone else noticed this problem? I'm hesitant to re-dl the app when I'm paying 4.4¢ per mb, at the risk of seeing the same result. I'd love to give this game a go though.

wow. it seems that they forgot that it depends on the SDL library. you'll have to download that from http://www.libsdl.org/. then the demo should work. :P

Now let's see if I like the game. :)

no, you can spit that back out. the note wasn't there originally. I emailed them after I saw your last post, and they said they had just themselves realized that they'd forgotten to mention it.

    Heh, nice one

    A minor oversight, eh? :)

Why the lib isn't included in the OSX installer is beyond me. I still haven't had a chance to play it yet, either. Damn Java assignment. Grrr

    Many options

    Could be a legal issue

    Could be they are lazy

Could be that they did not want to go to a real installer (for the proper installation location)

Could be that they asume a lot of people will have this already (not the best assumption).

    Re: Many options

the demo for dom 1 included SDL, IIRC... the reason they gave me for not bundling it with the second one was a desire to keep the demo size down, but the library's only a couple hundred kb! so, maybe just lazy ;)
